Spring Term
English writing text 1: Journey – A wordless book
Purpose: To write a narrative
In this writing sequence we will be focusing on the narrative structure whilst carefully considering the appropriate writing devices for effect such as personification, expanded noun phrases, pathetic fallacy and personification.
Following this we will be focusing on Greek myths and legends.
English writing text 2: Greek myths and legends
Purpose: To entertain
In this writing sequence, we will challenge the children to demonstrate a moral by including the importance of bravery, intelligence or right and wrong. We will also have a strong focus on selecting rich vocabulary in order to write effective character descriptions.
Maths: Multiplication and Division, followed by fractions [part 2]
In Multiplication and Division we will be refining the following skills:
Formal written method multiplication, short division (bus stop method), dividing with remainders and how to solve multi-step word problems.
In fractions [Part 2] we will be refining the following skills:
Multiplying fractions, finding fractions of amounts and using fractions as operators.

Who Let the Gods Out? – Maz Evans
During our guided reading sessions we will provide the children with opportunities to read aloud and practice reading with expression. Children will also have a series of questioning focusing on the reading VIPERS.

I = Inference
P = Predict
E = Explain
R = Retrieval
S = Sequence or Summarise
Religious Education:
Our key question this term is ‘What is it like to be a Muslim in Britain today?’
We will be exploring the importance of the 5 Pillars of Islam and how they influence Muslim life.

PE and Swimming:
Our outdoor PE sessions will take place on Thursday. This half term is Hockey.
Swimming replaces our indoor PE slot on Fridays. Here is further information regarding our 10 week swimming block:
Year 5 will be attending swimming lessons at Perdiswell Leisure Centre for sessions on the dates as listed below, at 10.00-10:30 (Fridays). The coach will leave school at 09.25 prompt & return approximately 11.20
Sessions in January 2025: 17th / 24th / 31st
Sessions in February 2025: 7th / 14th / Half Term 28th
Sessions in March 2025: 7th / 14th / 21st / 28th
Please note:
• If your child has a verruca please provide them with a specialist verruca sock.
• Please ensure that all articles of clothing/towels are clearly named.
• All pupils, both boys and girls, must wear a swimming hat if their hair is below their ears in length.
• Girls must always wear a one-piece swimsuit and the boys must wear proper swimming trunks, not shorts. These can be worn under school clothes on Friday morning’s.
• Earrings may not be worn in the pool. If children have just had their ears pierced they should tape over the earrings, but if at all possible please refrain from new piercings prior to your child’s swimming tuition
