Year 4 Information:
Below you will find some key information about life in Year 4. This includes the important skills your child will be developing, the enrichment opportunities they will experience, and other useful details about their time with us this year. We hope this gives you a clear picture of what to expect and how we will be supporting your child’s learning and wellbeing.
To help you further, we’ve also included additional documents at the end of this section. These provide more detail about our curriculum and offer ideas about how you can support your child’s learning at home.
SUMMER TERM 1
English writing text:
Survival Guides
Taking inspiration from Bear Grylls and his Desert Survival Guide, the children will develop their skills in writing an explanation text, detailing how to survive in the Rainforest (linking to Geography and Science units). In their survival guides, they will explore and apply key features of non-fiction writing, including clear headings, informative subheadings, concise key facts and supportive illustrations to enhance the reader’s understanding. The children will also focus on developing their sentence structure by using relative clauses to add extra detail and depth to their explanations. Through this unit, they will build their confidence in organising information effectively while engaging the reader with factual and well-structured writing.
The Tunnel by Anthony Brown
Based on the narrative The Tunnel by Anthony Browne, the children will develop their skills in writing to entertain by creating vivid and engaging setting descriptions. They will focus on using expanded noun phrases to build detailed imagery, alongside carefully chosen adverbs to add depth and precision to their writing. The children will learn to link their ideas effectively using coordinating and subordinating conjunctions, ensuring their descriptions flow smoothly. To enhance their creativity, they will incorporate similes and personification, bringing their settings to life for the reader. In addition, they will develop their understanding of nouns and pronouns to maintain clarity and cohesion throughout their writing.
Maths:
Decimals
In this unit, the children will develop their understanding of decimals, building on their knowledge of place value and fractions. They will learn to recognise and write decimal equivalents of tenths and hundredths, and understand how these relate to fractions and whole numbers. The children will compare and order decimals, as well as round decimals to the nearest whole number. They will also explore the relationship between decimals and measures, including money and length, applying their skills in practical contexts. Through a range of reasoning and problem-solving activities, the children will deepen their conceptual understanding, explain their thinking clearly and make connections across different areas of mathematics.
Times Tables
At the beginning of Summer Term 2 (early June), the children will take their statutory Multiplication Tables Check. It is therefore important that all children are fluent and confident with their times tables up to 12 × 12. Regular practice will help ensure they can recall these facts quickly and accurately, which will support them not only in this assessment but also in their wider mathematics learning as they progress into Years 5 and 6.
Guided Reading:
How to Train Your Dragon by Cressida Cowell.
During our guided reading sessions, children will have regular opportunities to read aloud, helping them to develop fluency, confidence, and expression. We will model and encourage the use of intonation, pacing, and emphasis to bring meaning to the text. In addition, children will respond to a series of carefully planned questions based on the reading VIPERS, ensuring they build a wide range of comprehension skills. These sessions will allow children to deepen their understanding of texts, discuss ideas with their peers, and apply strategies that support them as independent, thoughtful readers.
