This half term in Reception -

This half term our topic is Amazing Animals, and the children will be exploring stories, art and hands‑on activities linked to animals from around the world. Through our key texts, the children will be inspired to retell The Three Little Pigs, write their own animal fact files, and produce writing linked to Handa’s Surprise.

In art, we will be studying the work of Paul Klee. The children will explore how he used shapes and patterns in his paintings, then create their own collages by painting paper, cutting it into shapes and arranging them creatively. We will continue to develop skills in primary and secondary colour mixing, as well as identifying and using a wide range of 2D shapes.

This half term in maths, we are beginning with a focus on 3D shapes—exploring their names, properties and how they appear in the world around us. We will then move on to numbers to 20 and beyond, alongside early work on sharing and grouping.

How you can help at home:

  • Continue practising doubling facts
  • Keep revising number bonds to 5 and number bonds to 10
  • Keep practising counting to 20, especially those tricky teen numbers
  • Encourage children to say what comes after 19

Our work this term, will help children understand that not all places in the world are the same. We will explore:

  • Animals and plants that live and grow in our local environment
  • How different foods grow in different parts of the world
  • A world map to identify where the animals from Handa’s Surprise come from
  • Climates such as hot and cold places, and why different fruits grow in different regions
  • Photos of houses in Africa and compare them to houses in our local area—what would be different for Handa?

As part of RE, we will be thinking about special places, including a visit to our local church.

A few reminders to help the next half term run smoothly:

  • PE - This half term will be on Wednesdays.
  • Children go outside in all weathers, so a coat is essential. As the weather gets warmer, please send in named hats. Sunglasses are not permitted to be worn in school, so please keep these at home

  • Book bags and water bottles should come to school daily.

Reading books

Reading books must be kept in book bags at all times. A new reading book will be issued every Monday, matched to your child’s current phonics level, and will be collected in on a Thursday.

Please note that if a book is lost or damaged, there will unfortunately be a £5 charge to cover the cost of replacement. To help prevent damage, please do not place water bottles in book bags, as leaks can easily ruin books.

Reading Diaries

Please ensure reading diaries are to be sent in everyday too. If your child is taking part in a phonics or reading intervention, staff will need to make a note in the diary and inform you when this support is taking place.

If your child is currently using a wordless book, please do come and speak to us— we are more than happy to discuss how you can best support your child’s reading at home.

Thank you for your continued support in developing a love of reading!

In Summer 1, we will move onto teaching Phase 4.
